In presenting the award for Best Oil at the 2015 Hobsons Bay Art Show in Melbourne, judge Stephen Doyle said of Steve’s work:
“Sometimes you come across a painting when you’re in a gallery or a show that compels you to go back and have another look, you don’t know why, you can’t quite work it out. That’s what happened to me. Abstraction from a landscape is a very hard thing to do, it’s probably the toughest part of any sort of painting. You’re sort of on your own, no rules apply. When I think about some of the painters who have done this successfully in the past I think of John Olsen and the granddaddy of them all, Fred Williams. These people tend to make their own marks, have their own way and develop their own language. I saw the same thing in a beautiful painting by Steve Salo of Steampacket Market Geelong.”
