Steve Salo, 30 January 2022

I’m currently creating new works for a solo exhibition at Whitewall Art Projects in May. I had a great time painting my plein air series in March 2021 and can’t wait to get back to the Southern Highlands.

While I’ll always be a painter first and foremost (nothing beats experimenting with the physical mediums of painting), I was excited to be selected as one of the artists for Saatchi Art’s first NFT project. NFT (Non-Fungible Token) collectors purchase a one-of-a-kind blockchain-enabled digital artwork. It’s another art universe, which I don’t quite understand yet. What I can say is the works I’ve seen created by the artists in this project are pretty freakin’ amazing.

The Other Avatars is the first NFT project of its kind, a collection of handmade, originally-designed and stylistically-varied avatars created by 154 international artists selected by Saatchi Art curators. The subject matter is what made me give this a go, the avatars are “inspired by the self-portraits of Vincent van Gogh and the NFT landscape in 2021”.

To create works for the project I took my original portrait paintings of Van Gogh then played with them digitally to make unique NFTs. Actually, I just did the art side and thankfully Saatchi have been taking care of all the tech stuff. The amazing Saatchi Art NFT team has connected curators, artists and technology experts on Discord, provided us with a template and ‘traits’ checker, are minting the ‘tokens’, doing the ‘drop’, helping us set up our ‘wallet’ and answering a gazillion questions.

Like many people, I can’t wait to see the back of 2021. But it’s also had some upsides, I finished the year with three unexpected and exciting secret-squirrel projects, which I can now reveal.

I was selected to participate in Saatchi Art’s first NFT collection The Other Avatars.

Two portraits I’ve painted of actor Mark Deans (2016 and 2021) are featured in the set of the Back to Back Theatre production Entity.

‘Passerby Rutland Street’ will be the cover artwork for a book being published by Penguin Random House in South Africa. I did a somersault across the loungeroom when I heard this one!

I’m honoured to be connected with each of these projects.

From the archives, ‘Passerby Rutland Street’, oil on aluminium, 31 x 37 cm. SOLD

The Passerby series (2015) I have great memories of creating this show with Metropolis Gallery.

Following a wonderful experience painting the Back to Back Theatre actors and artistic director in 2016, I was commissioned to paint a second portrait of Mark Deans in late 2021. The two portraits of Mark are featured in the set of his solo show Entity.

During winter I took on a daily painting challenge and created a series of small still life works, which I shared on Instagram @steve.salo. Thank you to new and existing collectors and others interested in my work, I have an incredible community of supporters and it’s been great getting to know you through this series. It warms my heart that there’s people out there who appreciate still life paintings. I love painting them!

After postponing in 2020 due to Covid lockdowns, my solo show at Art2Muse is finally here…well, kind of. Sydney is back in lockdown, the gallery is closed, the opening cancelled and I can’t get over the border to attend anyway. Paintings can be viewed online at Art2Muse Gallery and the gallery reopens 11 October.
