It was great to have my mate Chris Bryan visit the studio recently for an interview for his radio program KickArts on The Pulse. We chatted about life as a full-time painter, my latest portraits exhibition at Metropolis Gallery, music I paint to, artistic influences, selling work online and the global reach of social media.

The exhibition runs from 7 to 28 November, with an Opening event Saturday 9 November, 4 – 6pm. Metropolis Gallery is at 64 Ryrie Street in Geelong Australia, located in the cultural precinct just a 5 min walk from Geelong Gallery and opposite the Geelong Arts Centre.

For someone who spends most days alone in a studio (I can think of no better life), I was surprised by how much I enjoyed the opportunity to speak directly with art lovers at The Other Art Fair. I talked art non-stop for four days to a wide array of artists and visitors and was fortunate to meet gallery director Katrina Hampton who invited me to show my artworks at Art2Muse Gallery in Sydney.
I’m excited to be creating a new series of paintings for a solo exhibition at Art2Muse Gallery from 10-23 November 2020. (UPDATE: Due to impacts of COVID-19 I will now be exhibiting in late 2021)
Art2Muse is located at 357 New South Head Road, Corner Manning Road, Double Bay, Sydney Australia.

Over the last two years I’ve painted about 30 landscapes inspired by the Mornington Peninsula in Victoria. A selection of these works will be exhibited on the Curved Wall Gallery at Frankston Arts Centre (FAC) from 15 August to 5 October. Getting your work seen is half the battle for an artist and I’m thrilled that thousands of visitors to the Arts Centre will be able to experience these paintings.

This is the beach where Australian Prime Minister Harold Holt disappeared from the face of the earth in 1967, a wild, unspoilt place that is both exhilarating and foreboding.
I never planned to become Spoonman. I’d actually wanted to stop painting altogether. It happens every once and a while, I either burn myself out, go mad trying to store the paintings or crack it with some aspect of the art world. “I’m giving up painting. No more painting, EVER!” This time I wouldn’t go in my studio. About two days into my new life, I was wiping a soup spoon at the sink and bang! I thought that painting on the spoon would be a beautiful surface. Like aluminium. And I could do it in the house, just muck around, it would help fill the time. They became like an extension of my sketch books, I was not expecting to do anything with them.
The first spoon I painted was of me (a blank canvas with an unknown future), then came animals, insects and landscapes, moving to portraits of master painters and interpretations of iconic artworks. About a week in, renewed, I was back in the studio working on larger portraits of Klimt, Sargent and van Gogh. Paying homage.
I continue spooning whenever inspiration strikes. About 20 portraits on spoons will be included in my November exhibition at Metropolis, along with a series of postcard-size works and new large works.
‘Afternoon Light – Helsinki’ has been selected as a finalist for the inaugural $30,000 Splash McClelland Contemporary Watercolour Award at McClelland Sculpture Park and Gallery in Melbourne. The Award was established to showcase Australian artists who use the medium of watercolour in highly accomplished and innovative ways.
‘Afternoon Light – Helsinki’ is a response to an enigmatic atmosphere, an attempt to create mystery in a cityscape painting. The low-key muted palette reflects the sense of deeper mood, this place is genuine and non-pompous. Prior to visiting Helsinki, I’d spent a month in the Finnish countryside experiencing ancient forests and moody lakes, I carried the feeling of being in these places into the urban environment in my choice of composition, colour and tone. The figures in the cityscape mirror the gentle presence of the Finnish people on their environment and as individuals.

Steve Salo: Recent Paintings will be showing at Metropolis Gallery from 18 May to 10 June 2018. I feel very lucky to have Metropolis director Robert Avitabile always encouraging me to explore and push my work. He’s as excited as I am to exhibit what this experimentation has produced. The exhibition also includes some landscapes inspired by my residency at Police Point on the Mornington Peninsula.
Metropolis is at 64 Ryrie Street in Geelong Australia, located in the cultural precinct just a 5 min walk from Geelong Gallery.
