Steve Salo, Self 2015It’s exciting to have one of my self portraits shortlisted for the 2015 Prospect Portrait Prize in Adelaide. The prize sought “artworks that are interpretations and reflections of the subject but not a literal likeness”.

In contrast to some of the more anguished self portraits I’ve painted in the past, ‘Self 2015’ reflected a day (or maybe this year) when hope and promise conquered fear and overwhelm. A big lesson from my studio fire in 2013 was that there’s no point hoarding art in your own little cave, it’s created to be seen and this year I’ve put in a mega effort to get my work into group exhibitions across Australia.

The 2015 Prospect Portrait Prize exhibition will be held at Prospect Gallery, 1 Thomas Street, Nailsworth, Adelaide, from 6 December 2015 to 17 January 2016.

Steve Salo, Confessions of a Guilty PriestIt was an honour to be selected as a finalist in this year’s Mosman Art Prize, one of Australia’s oldest and most coveted visual arts awards.

I don’t really enjoy crowds and openings, but I’m so glad I made a quick trip up to Sydney to attend this one. Loved seeing the exhibition and also made a visit to the Art Gallery of NSW to view the Archibald and Wynne prize shows, a truly inspiring day!

The 2015 Mosman Art Prize is showing 25 July to 30 August, at the Mosman Art Gallery in Sydney, NSW. My painting ‘Confessions of a Guilty Priest’ depicts the reluctant and shady truth as revealed by the Royal Commission into Institutional Responses to Child Sexual Abuse.
